Does it fit my quarterly goals?

It’s my birthday today. I’m turning forty-two years old. That’s a lot for some, and nothing for others.

To me, age isn’t really a thing, as such. It’s just a number, and it grows by one each year. My body doesn’t seem to mind these occasions either, the flesh suffers at a much slower scale, but suffer it does. I’m not twenty-five anymore, as they say, and as the numbers clearly state.

This is where I wish I’d had a list of things I’ve accomplished this past year, a yearly round-up of how things are going, but I haven’t. It’s like those new year’s lists that I enjoy when written by clever people, that, I wish I had that. But no, it seems I live my life in a current, upstream or downstream, but a steady current (with some sharp bends, at times). It’s not a flight of stairs for me, thus my mind can’t truly grasp the idea to recap. Maybe it’s because I’m awful with time, not keeping it, or arriving on time, but rather, telling how long it was something happened. I can’t even tell how long I’ve been living with my girlfriend, not within a six-month span, possibly not even twelve.

(Don’t worry, she knows this. Thus, she’s always right when we disagree on when something happened. Don’t tell her I said that.)

Time’s tricky, age is not, to me. I’ve got a friend who’s really shaken up, almost depressed, when he turned forty. Not in that ironic, or comical, kind of way, but in the I have to buy a motorbike right now, otherwise I’m old kind of way. He’s a normal kind of guy, it’s beyond me why forty is a thing. It’s just a number.

Celebrations are calm, today, because the little one is sick, which didn’t do wonders to last night’s sleep, and we’ve got a ton of work to do. We splurged last weekend, though, in more ways than one, that was fun.

So, yeah, forty-two. Have at it.

Thank you for your kind words on Twitter, both public and in DMs. Much appreciated. For those who doesn’t subscribe to Dense Discovery (why not? it’s great!), I took out a classified telling everyone it’s my birthday, at some point. My motivations were simple: Today’s issue coincided with my birthday, and that was it. Just for fun, and to support Kai’s excellent newsletter.

But, if you’d really like to follow along, do consider subscribing to my newsletter. Or, if you’re an iPad nut, check out Switch to iPad. You can, obviously, follow me on Twitter, too.

Phew, that’s enough self-promotion for today. Time for some cake!
