Last week’s linkage (week 13, 2022)

The Bored Horse newsletter goes out to subscribers on Fridays, free of charge. One section in said newsletter contains links to things I found interesting, things that are not, in fact, published on Bored Horse because it appears that there are other websites on the internet, too. Who would’ve known?!

🪦 A certain iconic agent’s grave (!) is located on the Faroe Islands, and you can go look at it, because tourism is everything.

🏰 On that note, you can buy the Scarface mansion. Or rather, it’s for sale, but you’ll need a proper wallet to actually buy it.

🏝 Jeffrey Epstein’s private island is also for sale. I wouldn’t buy that…

🇺🇦 Ukraine is winning, states this Atlantic story. Oh, let’s hope so, and make this war end already.

🇪🇺 Weird EU law could, inadvertently, break encrypted messaging apps. I don’t see this happening, but it’s a story now.

🇷🇺 Did Anonymous hack the Central Bank of Russia? So they claim 👇🏻

🧬 Scientists have mapped the entire human genome. This is cool.

🐌 Slimebots will pull out that coin you snorted, in the future at least. I mean, any story with “magnetic slime” in its title will get a link in my newsletter, no matter how ludicrous it might be.

🤖 Too slimy? Don’t worry, there are nanobots too, coming soon to a bloodstream inside you.

📣 A feature on how, and why, Telegram became the go-to app for Ukrainians. Telegram is great, but it’s not without its problems.

🌏 When the internet goes down, the Reticulum Network Stack will save us, or so some thinks at least. It’s really a tool to build alternate networks, and it has its die-hard fans, obviously.

☎️ Or, you know, you could uncut the cord, and use landlines and ethernet cables again. I’ve seen surprisingly many thumbs up for these sort of posts and pieces the past week, making me wish I’d compiled a list for future reference.

👀 Security cameras from Wyze has had an unpatched, and known and ignored, security hole for three years. Yeah, don’t buy anything from that company, ever.

🤡 Elon Musk cites Eminem’s “Without me” in his battle with the SEC. I don’t even know where to begin…

Let’s hope Putin has a new career in mind, and this is his audition 👇🏻

Actually, let’s hope he’s forgotten instead. 🖕🏻

🎧 Dyson Zone are noise-cancellation headphones with built-in air purifier. Shut out both the shitty air, and bumbling buffoon talk.

🗡 The sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is delayed to spring 2023 (message delivered in true Japanese fashion). That means that maybe I can wrap up the current installment in time, then.

🎤 An interesting piece on Meredith Monk, go read.

✏️ Eivind Hjertnes shares how he writes blog posts. Because, you know, blogging is still a thing, no matter what people might say.

✒️ Remember Paper, the iPad app? Andy Allen shares some behind the scenes tidbits about the app on its 10th (!) birthday, that just happened to coincide with mine (March 29th).

📲 Switch to iPad managed to raise $510 to help Ukraine, which makes me happy. I also wrote about using the default Calendar app, the Diablo Immortal pre-order, and the new black Magic Trackpad.
