The importance of evergreens

I woke up with a splitting headache today. It’s either related to stress (more on that another time), or that my soon-to-be forty-two-year-old eyes need glasses when peering at code on a smaller than usual screen. To be honest, it’s probably a combination of the two, easily remedied by getting rid of the stress factors (I’m putting it off — silly me), and popping into the office where I’ve got a 24” M1 iMac to stare at. Or get glasses, I guess.

Said headache is limiting my output, though. It made me think about something that certainly should be in Blogging 101, which is, always keep a couple of evergreen posts at the ready. Evergreen posts, or just evergreens, are posts that can run at any time because they’re just not time-sensitive. You write them, and then you hold on to them for as long as you require, or as long as they’ll keep if there’s a theoretical end-use date to them. They’re at the ready when life gets in the way — like a splitting headache, for example — but you still want to publish something.

I wish this was an evergreen post, but alas, Bored Horse is too much in its infancy to have any of those. It should, and I should’ve planned for it before launching, but life got in the way, and I had to get some work done a full week earlier than anticipated. Hence, the need for evergreens, again.

So, let my headache, through which I’m typing this, be a lesson to you, fellow creative: Write yourself some evergreens for your outlet. You can thank me later.
